CHELSEA CULP is an interdisciplinary performance and installation artist. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007 with a BFA in Art History, Theory, and Criticism. She has continued her education in national/international residencies. Much of her art addresses the performance of gender via garment, movement, and speech, and the collapse of performance when universal/timeless experience breaks artifice. This break is often expressed through the abstraction of symbols (and materials) in a recognizable and oppressive syntax. Her performances and sculptures are often made collaboratively, involving concepts or people from outside of the art community. She is currently working on projects with the pseudo-hippie-lumberjack-fairie-ghost-glitch-art band MRS.HOUND, and Co-Directs the exhibition project space NEW CAPITAL with artist BEN FOCH.
