In 2019, the New Museum hosted a special in-gallery conversation between artist Carmen Argote and Curator Margot Norton on the occasion of “Carmen Argote: As Above, So Below.” For her first solo museum exhibition in New York City, Argote’s large-scale paintings and works on paper incorporated fruit, plants, and other natural materials gathered from in and around her residency in Guadalajara, Mexico. Argote and Norton discussed Argote’s use of these unusual and symbolic materials, as well as the intricate threads of embodiment, performance, and community engagement involved in the creation of her work.
