Willa Nasatir

Hi, my name is Willa Nasatir.

I think a good place to start is the process. The distortions in the pictures occur in camera. They’re a result of shooting a tableau through panes of glass and through screens made out of latex and Plexiglas. I’m very interested in the depth of feeling one can achieve through photographic effect and how the camera can be manipulative and highly subjective rather than objective.

I was thinking about the show when I made these works. They’re meant as a sequence titled natural history #1, #2, and #3. I was thinking about what the words nature and history mean separately and together and as concepts to undermine when thinking about gender. Nature and history as words, like when we talk about gender people can use biology as an argument for gender being a fixed fact, but the reality is that that’s untrue and there’s no exact science to gender and sexuality and that it can be fixed and it can be fluid.

The scenes themselves are not meant as direct illustrations of a concept rather they are meant to speak more to the distortion of logic that occurs within our subconscious. Desire and queerness can be deeply nonsensical.
